VAT work can involve significant manual checking, client follow-ups and document management. FreeAgent has introduced seven updates aimed at making the VAT workflow more efficient for accountants, bookkeepers and their clients.

A new tax rate column in VAT reports makes it easier to see the rate applied to each transaction, while the rules based VAT Checker can flag potential anomalies, including unexpected rates, custom VAT values and VAT applied to non-UK transactions.

Practices also have greater control over how clients interact with VAT. Separate settings can determine whether clients can see the VAT area, file returns themselves or require approval, with practice wide defaults and client level overrides available.

Other changes include the ability to file returns with unexplained bank transactions, unlock VAT returns without contacting support, and see whether transactions have supporting attachments directly within the Show Transactions report.

Finally, clients can now attach up to 50 image files to a single bank transaction, making it easier to maintain a complete evidence trail for complex purchases and invoices.

Together, these changes are designed to reduce manual work while giving practices greater control over their VAT processes.
