Hiring strategies among UK SMEs may be shifting as businesses look for more practical ways to develop talent and address skills shortages. Increasingly, apprenticeships are being viewed as a viable alternative to traditional graduate recruitment.
According to research highlighted by Employment Hero, 46% of SMEs say they value apprenticeships and university degrees equally, while many small businesses see apprenticeships as a way to develop skills that align closely with their operational needs.
The “earn while you learn” model allows businesses to train individuals within their own environment, helping organisations build capability over time while reducing hiring risk. However, challenges still remain, with 43% of SMEs saying the apprenticeship system can be complex to navigate.
